We currently have a fantastic opportunity to join our team as an Veterinary Nurse & Animal Welfare Coordinator
About the Role
Reporting to the Curatorial Supervisor, you will be responsible for:
- Providing animal health support including medical treatments, health checks, and preventative care across all SEA LIFE habitats, with a focus on rehabilitation and quarantine areas.
- Supporting the Curatorial team with husbandry, feeding, habitat and life support maintenance, across the aquarium, with a primary focus on the rehabilitation and quarantine space.
- Working closely with our site and regional veterinarian, including conduction and assisting with procedures, postmortems, treatment planning and reporting.
- Coordinating training and enrichment initiatives across a range of taxa to ensure species appropriate and welfare aligned outcomes.
- Overseeing nutrition planning, diet sheet updates, food prep protocols and health record management using OERCA and MS Office systems.
- Conducting water quality testing, coordinating laboratory tasks and managing veterinary inventory including medications and safety data sheets.
- Driving the company vehicle to transport animals and supporting other operational needs and administrative tasks within the Curatorial team.
- Acting as the site radiation officer and ensuring all veterinary/lab equipment is serviced and compliant.
About You
A passion for working in the tourism/attraction industry is essential to any of our roles. To shine in this position you will also have:
- Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing with a minimum of 2 years full-time equivalent experience in a veterinary hospital setting
- Practical experience in veterinary nursing practices including surgical, anaesthetic, medical, diagnostic, and pathology laboratory procedures, along with management of medical supplies and equipment
- Certificate III in Captive Animals or equivalent zoo/aquarium industry experience (desirable)
- Radiation Officer Licence (or willingness to obtain)
- Understanding of water quality and life support systems (beneficial)
- Detailed knowledge of anatomy across a variety of aquatic taxa
- Experience working with aquatic animals is highly desirable
- Knowledge of the Exhibited Animals Protection Act and associated regulations
- Experience in animal records and information management systems, including data integrity and administration
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to train and influence others
- Ability to work flexibly in a dynamic environment with changing priorities and high pressure situations
- Demonstrated initiative, independence, and sound task prioritisation
- High level organisational and administrative skills, with competency in MS Office
- A good understanding of the Five Domains model as it applies to aquariums
- Current manual driver’s licence
- Diving is not required, but Divemaster or equivalent qualifications would be an advantage
- Physical capability to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, crouch, kneel, balance, climb up to 4m, and lift up to 20kg
